Saffron Digital All Set to launch UltraViolet Online Video Platform

At Saffron Digital, we’ve been running cloud based locker and Digital Rights Management (DRM) domain services since 2009, and our next generation platform has just added UltraViolet (UV), with a seamless transition for the end user between non-UV and UV storefronts.

Ultraviolet and Saffron Digital

For the uninitiated, UV lets users access all their movies from a single digital locker in the cloud on whatever compatible device they choose. All your content from wherever you bought it, is available in a single location, via a single log-in. Simple.

It’s a complex technical solution though, covering everything you might need in a digital ecosystem, and is split across multiple independent system ‘roles’.

But at Saffron Digital we’ve been delivering exactly this to our non-UV customers since 2009. The latest version of our platform is UV ready, out of the box, making is easy to get up and running quickly and taking away the technical headaches. Buy your content once, own it forever, and watch it over and over again on the family TV, computer, set top box, tablet or smartphone.

UV is backed by a consortium that includes the major Hollywood studios, consumer electronics manufacturers and various other service providers and digital agencies – and we’re one of them, and have been from the start.

 

Our UV Solution

Ultraviolet is an ideal solution for enabling users to watch their content on whatever device they choose. But this is not new. Our current UV compliant platform builds on the years of experience we‘ve got running UV-like services, it also includes the work we have already completed on UV specific components. The platform is unique; it allows our global partners to run UV and non-UV territories at the same time and switch easily to UV as a new UV territory is announced.

 

Cloud Based Locker

We’ve been running a cloud based rights and device management locker for almost 4 years, we know the problems that new UV implementers will come across and we’ve solved them already. Our experience and existing technology is a proven carrier grade solution, and the latest version with UV builds on and enhances this.

 

Digital Rights Management

Since the launch of our platform, we have been running multiple DRM solutions, all using a cloud based domain that enables content rights to be shared across devices and DRMs. We support PlayReady, OMA2, Adobe Access, Widevine and Marlin, and our solution ensures complete and seamless interoperability between the differing DRM rights languages. We have had a number of notable DRM milestones as well, these include: First long form OMA2 service in Europe with Motorola, first commercial mobile deployment of MS PlayReady with Samsung, providing enhanced security for Google Widevine and also supporting full interactivity between all of them.

 

Saffron Secure Player

Our secure player takes this DRM expertise and as well as including in our own player, removing any reliance on existing in-built players; opening up a much larger range of devices that can be supported and enabling greater reach. Our player supports industry standard formats for conventional DRM protected files, in addition to supporting the UV Common File Format (CFF). Common Streaming Format (CSF) will be fully supported once the specification is finalized. We are already prepared for the sunrise of CFF in Q1 2013.

 

Studio Relationships and Content Security

Our platform also builds on the studio relationships we have forged around our DRM expertise and content security. This relationship means we are fully approved to hold BluRay and DVD master files, and have multiple solutions that have been studio approved. The impact of this is that content handling and storage approval for potential retailers will be simplified by choosing us. We have also additionally supplied content solutions for several of the Hollywood studios directly.

We provide Ultraviolet client and player software, full storefront and retail management solutions including promotional management, content and meta-data handling for the Ultraviolet ecosystem. UltraViolet is the natural evolution of what we already do.
